AI persona testing vs Hotjar and Clarity: which do you need?

Hotjar and Microsoft Clarity tell you what real visitors did on your site. AI persona testing tells you what a simulated visitor would think, and it works before you have any traffic. They answer different questions, and most small sites need the second one first.

What heatmaps and recordings do well

Heatmaps and session recordings show where people click, scroll and give up. Clarity is free, and Hotjar's paid plans start around $32 a month (annual billing; prices checked November 2026). Both are excellent for diagnosing a page that already has visitors.

They have two limits. First, you need volume: a few dozen sessions rarely show a pattern. Second, they show behavior, not reasons. You see that people stopped scrolling at the pricing section. You do not see that they thought the price was unclear.

What AI persona testing does

RealReaction AI sends 30 simulated visitors, each with a different background and goal, through your page. Each one reports what they understood, what made them hesitate, and whether they would act. You get a score, the recurring objections, and specific fixes. It takes minutes and needs no traffic.

The panel is simulated. It is not a substitute for real customers, and we say so on every report. Its value is speed and coverage: it surfaces the objections a real audience would most likely raise, early and cheaply.

Which to use when

Situation Better fit
Pre-launch, no traffic yet AI persona testing
Testing a new headline or layout before shipping AI persona testing
Fewer than a few hundred visits a month AI persona testing
Finding where real visitors drop off Clarity or Hotjar
Spotting rage clicks and broken elements Clarity or Hotjar
Understanding why a page underperforms Both, in order

A practical workflow

  1. Run an AI review before launch and fix the top three objections.
  2. Launch, and install Clarity (free) to see real behavior.
  3. When recordings show a drop-off, run another review on that page to form a hypothesis about why.
  4. Change one thing, then check both again.

Bottom line

Use behavior tools to measure what happened. Use persona testing to predict what will confuse people before it costs you sales. If you have no traffic yet, start with the review.

Try it: run a free review on your site, or see pricing.
